Fashion watches – they are cheap, cheerful and ultimately disposable, being as much interest to collectors as a two-seasons-old t-shirt.Recently we have seen some Fashion Brands launch themselves into the prestige watch market. replica Burberry watches has unveiled a watch collection in the ￡1000+ range. The cases have more of the design cues that you would expect from a ‘proper’ watch brand and the straps in the Burberry collection are alligator. The movements are Soprod or Ronda and so will not excite the nerds to any great extent.Ermenegildo Zegna have played at two levels in this game, their newest range of ‘High Performance’ watches house basic ETA calibres and carry ￡1000+ price tags, but for a little more money you could have a replica Graham with a Girard Perregaux movement inside. Whether Burberry or Zegna carry enough brand clout make these anything more than luxury versions of the regular fashion watch, only time and the market will tell. If Girard Perregaux struggle in the pre-owned area, what price a second-hand Zegna?Ralph Lauren has gone about this all a little differently. Working together with the Richemont Group, they have the pick of movements from brands such as Piaget, Jaeger LeCoultre etc. along with their case construction experience. This is combined with a design ethos that follows the ‘Heritage’ path central to Ralph Lauren’s clothing line. The result is not too dissimilar to the early days of Cartier, a focused house style housing fine movements. Will this prove collectable in the future? I am not sure, but they have given themselves the best possible chance.Which brings us to IWC for Prada, not a Prada line of replica Jacob&Co but a dual named dial in the style of the old ‘Retailer & Maker’ watches. The reason given by George Kern, the CEO of IWC, for the existence of this watch is simple – Patrizio Bertelli, the owner of Prada is a huge fan of IWC and he asked them to do it. This was a few months before the Prada team was to compete in the America’s Cup Yacht Race and so it was good publicity for both brands. This was 2003 when IWC was still fighting for brand recognition. So we have a Prada version of the IWC GST chronograph, with the small seconds dial removed to allow for both brand names to appear on the dial in a clean, uncluttered manner. The house colours of the brand – black, grey and red, are used sympathetically in a manner that suggests instrument dials in a Porsche-design kind of way. The understated design coupled with the limited production of 2000 pieces and the presence of the IWC name, should make this ‘fashion’ watch a true collector’s piece.
